To drag a fish out of the water with a fibreglass rod - which has to be able to bend as much as possible – and then throw the fish back into the water is a passion shared by many, and these ´troubled´ individuals should of course try their luck on Gran Canaria. A lot of anglers believe that the farther you travel away from home, the bigger fish you will encounter; however, this does not hold water!

Gran Canaria provides fishing trips all year long, but, from April to October, you are able to catch some really big fish – up to 500 kilograms. These are caught by trolling so you have to be a dedicated angler to enjoy starring at the water for six hours while you are at sea, 10km from the coast.

The fish that you catch this time of year live close to the surface, thus you often sense the fish before they bite on. And when they bite on, they jump out of the water. These fish include a Wahoo of 40kg, White Marlin of 50kg, Bonito of 10kg, Dolphinfish of 15kg, Tuna of 40 to 300kg and a Blue Marlin of 150 to 500kg.

You catch fish from the bottom of the ocean the rest of the year and, thus, you encounter other exciting fish. However, these seldom exceed 20kg and do not put up the same fight when they come to surface from a depth of 200m as the fish that live close to the surface.

In addition, it is possible to book pre-arranged fishing trips to La Gomera and other places where you – at the beginning of the summer – are able to drag as many fish as you want out of the water. If you want to hire a boat for several days, you have to order a few days in advance as demand is high when big fish are looming at the surface. The different boats often organise individual trips that meet your demands – including accommodation and food.

Regardless of your experiences with fishing, you are able to catch the ´big one´ as fish cannot tell the difference!
