La Gomera

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

La Gomera is one of the smaller islands in the Canaries and is located just ´behind´ Tenerife. You can reach the island by sailing or flying. If you are on a two-week holiday on Gran Canaria, we recommend that you spend 2-3 days on La Gomera. La Gomera is known for its large national park that is located in the middle of the island. There are a lot of hiking routes of various lengths within the park. When you move around on the island, you will come across several signs that indicate a hiking route´s length, gradient and destination point. Those who do not fancy a walk thus have the opportunity to the drive to other end and wait for the blistered hikers there.

To book accommodation in advance is not necessary as there are available rooms all over – and they are cheap. In a small hotel in one of the large towns, a double room with bath for one night costs approximately 55 Euros. These rooms are not modern, but they are clean and tidy. Breakfast can be enjoyed in several places and a breakfast buffet including coffee and a smile costs approximately 7.50 Euros or more.

If you want to go sightseeing, you can hire a medium-sized car for approximately 50 Euros per day – all inclusive. Food on this small, fantastic island is fairly cheap and a daily budget of 50 Euros is adequate for one person, thus your holiday budget will not suffer.

The journey to and from La Gomera can be undertaken in many ways. You can choose to fly (in a small 14-seater propeller plane that makes a terrible noise) directly from Gran Canaria. Or you can drive to Agaete and take the ferry to Tenerife where you board an express ferry (Fred. Olsen lines) at Los Christianos on the southern part of Tenerife – the crossing takes approximately 40 minutes. You can also fly from Gran Canaria to Tenerife and take a taxi (35 Euros) to the ferry port.

La Gomera is a green get-away for individuals that are looking for peace and quiet, but want to experience sun, heat and friendly locals – at the right price.

When relaxing in a quiet bar at the harbour, it feels as if time has stopped.
